School Kitchens Funding
There are a number of government initiatives in place for Local Authorities to provide funding for school kitchens.

Primary Capital Programme

The Primary Capital Programme aims to rebuild or refurbish half of the primary schools in England and Wales and will provide £1.9bn of funding between 2008 and 2011 and a further £500m per year after that until 2023.

Building Schools for the Future

Launched in 2003, the BSF programme will invest over £45bn into rebuilding and remodelling every state secondary school over a 15-year period. Funding is available for every state secondary school in England and Wales and is being issued in a series of waves.


Action: BSF is being delivered through Partnership for Schools who are providing support to local authorities throughout the entire programme. To deliver a BSF programme, local authorities must set up a LEP (Local Education Partnership), with a private sector partner and BSFI (Building Schools for the Future Investments LLP), a limited liability partnership whose members include the Department for Children, Schools and Families and Partnerships UK. BSFI are the sister organisation of PFS and is the central investor in the BSF programme.

Regional Development Agency Single Budget Programme

Local Authorities can contact their regional development agency as school kitchens upgrade may fall within the criteria for funding within the context of their Regional Economic Strategy and Corporate Plans.
